The very first 'iron-clad' warship ever built was launched from the Thames Ironworks yard in Canning Town on December 29th 1860. It was, at the time, the largest warship afloat.

The Warrior can still be seen at Portsmouth Dockyard along with other famous vessels and commuters using the stairway connecting the lower rail ticket area and the upper entrance of Canning Town Station can see machined into the stainless steel side of the stairwell is a commemorative scroll containing a dedication to the Thames Ironworks and the Warrior. The station itself occupies part of the site of the original Thames Ironworks dockyard.
