THE BIG 'N'
in
the 'hood....... (and Mr. B)
True Tales of the Big'N'.....(All completely true, but neighbour's names changed for Ed's safety...)
No. 1 - One morning Big Lil was watching TV with her daughter Luscious Liz, while the Big'N' was visiting. They were watching a 'serious' chat programme which highlighted cervical cancer, and the suggestion that it could be hereditary and the phrase was used that it was " to be found in people's genes.". Big'N' retorted .."I'm alright then, I don't wear jeans..". "No," said Liz "they mean it's already in your bodily make-up.". To which the Big'N' replied "That's all right as well, cos I don't wear any makeup either........."
So sayeth the Big'N' 2 - " My lad's not really earning enough money and is getting really castrated...."
So sayeth the Big'N' 3 - Big Lil's youngest cat was on heat and Lil was keeping her in the house, and naturally, the kitten was getting very worked up. Big'N's comment upon being told the cat was randy (while laughing at her own naughty joke) - " What she needs is one of them generators....yuk, yuk, yuk...."
So sayeth the Big'N' 4 - "My hubby's so ill lately, he's suffering from these virgin (vertigo) attacks, that cause him to get really bad chest pains ...."
So sayeth the Big'N' 5 - Big Lil suggested to the Big'N' that a bottle each of scotch and brandy was insufficient for a 'large' celebration, and that some people might drink "gin, vodka or other types of spirits"...."Oh yeh" said the Big'N' "OK, I'll add them to my list.......how do you spell gin?"...
So sayeth (about) the Big'N' 6 - Two Rathbone Market traders were discussing with the local funeral director the process of 'beautifying' the bodies of newly passed on local residents, and how their relatives appreciated his artistic work before the big send-off. Just then the Big'N' walked past..... "Mind you, even I couldn't do much for that though", the smiling funeral director stated, .....
So sayeth the Big'N' 7 - A friend of the Big'N's eldest lad was speaking to the Big'N on the phone, relating about how nice the Italian meal was that he and the Big'N's eldest had shared a few evenings previous - "you really ought to visit this Italian restaurant with your husband you know, the food was delicious..." said the friend.... "No I don't think so," replied the Big'N', "I don't like curry.............".
So sayeth the Big'N' 8 - On a local market shopping trip with a friend, the friend noticed some nuts for sale at very reasonable prices, and asked the Big'N' if she needed to get some for Christmas. "Oh no," said she "My lot don't eat many, and anyway I've still got a load left from last year......." moral - don't touch the Big'N's nuts....
Updates on the Big'N will be regularly inserted.....

June 2004. Work is nearing completion on 'upgrading' the A13 - the main
arterial road through Newham. The new roads in the south of
Newham are now well-used, especially the 'Limehouse Link' road connecting the A13 to the Lea
underpass and the Isle of Dogs / City route.
The east-west Newham Way at Prince Regents Lane
junction is now a four-lane underpass with the 'roundabout' and slip
roads above just needing 'cosmetic' completion.
The second Canning Town flyover is open to
traffic giving easier flow in both directions, this is surrounded by various
temporary slip roads and is nearing the point where new connections and closures
will take place.
The underpass beneath Newham
Way connecting New Barn Street with Freemasons Road is being almost complete,
this will allow the current
bus route 'crossing' the A13 to continue more safely.
The plans to remove, refurbish or eradicate 1,700 homes in south Canning Town area is now starting in earnest after a local poll showed a big majority in favour of the plan, and some families have already been moved out. This is a major part of the re-modernisation of Canning Town which is intended to eventually (apart from 'upgrading' the shopping and service facilities) change the perspective of local people from their 'working class' past. Actual proposals have supposedly changed to be more favourable towards the current residents wishes, with a promise that 'no resident will be forced to leave the area permanently unless they wish to do so themselves'.
The proposed major supermarket to be built at Canning Town is apparently in its initial planning stage and is apparently includes an office / residential provision in its multi-storey design alongside the Canning Town Flyover. The building will also take up part of the existing area covered by the current roundabout beneath the flyover. Apart from a multi-storey car-park, 'community' facilities are to be built along the nearby Manor Road including a leisure centre and swimming baths, but this is more in line with the fact that this area is adjacent to the proposal to upgrade the Bow Creek into a 'marina' style, upper class residential area.
As part of the upgrading of the Eastern Gateway - as Canning Town is hoped to become, ExCel - a large 'Exhibition Centre' now established alongside the Victoria Dock to supposedly employ nearly 14,000. and the new East London University campus opened in September 1999, with an initial 2,400 students which is rising to 7,500 within a few years is also established. Add to this completed construction of several luxury hotels in the vicinity, and several thousand more jobs are hopefully on the horizon for local people.
