1891 Fast Work. On December the 10th, 1891 a group of 85 men, workers at the Great Eastern Railway Works - once a major employer in Stratford - set a record for building, from scratch, a complete six-wheeled steam locomotive (and tender)
The engine - No. 930. was built and completed in 9 hours and 47 minutes. and went on to work for 43 years, travelling 1,127,750 miles before finally being scrapped in 1935. The record beat all previous and was never surpassed.
